Appearance
Aslak...
- is a solemn-looking young man.
- is slightly short of 180 cm.
- had a fairly athletic body even before vampirism.
- maintains his short hair with care unexpected of a man with no reflection.
- has red eyes of a very deep hue. May appear brighter in shade during strong emotional states.
- wears a t-shirt and some dark pants (with belt) as his default clothes. Adds a sweater and a pair of long johns during winter. Colors wary.
- tends to wear a trench coat as well when going outside. Owns several. Beige.
Equipment
- A variety of relatively normal weaponized items (an axe, metal pipe and so on) for cases which for one reason or another would require the use of a close-quarters weapon. Usually just one is needed for any mission.
- Glock 17, standard issue. A firearm of choice. No nickname given.
Personality
There was a time in Aslak's life when he was content with the way things were. While mostly calm and collected, he had his spouts of passion and anger. While not the sharpest tool in the shed, he had enough common sense and reason to get by. While not the most social person, he managed to be likable enough to make friends regardless. And while he was nothing special, he was a stable, normal person. Considering all of this, becoming a vampire and being dragged along into a mess known as the supernatural side of the world was naturally a shocking event. It would surely cause some drastic changes in Aslak. But the thing is... that it didn't.
To elaborate, Aslak doesn't treat the supernatural with the respect and fear that a prominently normal person like him should. All of the magic and seemingly impossible beings, feats and so on only tend to irritate him. The fact that he has been brought into the whole mess by force, making him be involved in it more and more as the time passes, has caused nothing more than frustration to Aslak. None of it should be real; the world is as complicated as it already is, and it doesn't need a supernatural layer on top of all that. But despite thinking that it would just be for the best if it was all just one big dream, Aslak will manage. For now.
However, despite holding a grudge towards the organization he works for due to the above reasons, Aslak holds no issue in actually working for RSF. As it stands, it's just a work which he happens to be suitable for at the moment. And as everyone knows, you don't need to actually like your job. It does mean that the methods and results can be lacking, accomplishing merely what has been told to do and nothing more. They don't have a certain edge to them. They are dull.
But it's not like Aslak would be a dull person himself. Well, he is, but he wouldn't necessarily need to be. He's perfectly capable of somewhat impressive mental feats despite not being a much of a learned man, but only when he can be bothered to do so. This usually means moments when the situation is getting really out of hand. When Aslak comes across such a moment, he'll recognize it and starts to patch it up with the full extensions of his skills. The results vary, but since Aslak has a knack for thinking on his feet, they usually lean more towards the positive than the negative. Of course, no such patching would be needed in the first place if he were to put the same amount of effort into actually making proper plans, cautions and preparations beforehand. Alas, such is the way that he is and others just have to learn to live with it.
Aslak has no problems with actually interacting with people. What he does have a problem with, lately, is caring about them. He has been steadily been "untaught", either on purpose or as a side product, certain interpersonal elements. This is good in the sense that Aslak would have a hard time to function properly if he felt like he should care about the people and otherworldly beings that he's about to kill. But unfortunately most humans don't have a on/off switch for that kind of stuff. Nowadays, he has hard time with feeling attachment towards anyone. Aslak can name many people that he would consider as his acquaintances, but he could count all of the people who he considers to be more than that with one hand (ie. his family). He is not unaware of the this, but at the same time, he's not entirely sure what to do about it. So for now, he'll withstand it.
In the end, Aslak is a man who doesn't like the world that he lives in and is more or less indifferent towards its inhabitants. But despite of not liking the world, he's trying to get by due to his will of a survivor. Despite not feeling anything towards most people, he still longs for something more out of an old habit.
Abilities
The generic abilities and disabilities as a (newborn) vampire - Ability to turn people of the opposite sex into vampires like themselves by allowing a victim to ingest their blood, drain a victim of blood to turn them into very weak Revenants, required to drink blood often, large weakness to sunlight (causes burning sensation), sink in large bodies of water and cannot cross unassisted, become 1 level weaker in all appropriate abilities when surrounded by running water.
Aslak's mentor also took the liberty of imparting some of her knowledge of magic down to her apprentice. Namely, alchemy, since Aslak's mind isn't well suited for breaking the laws of perceived reality. He's still a novice at this magical art, but his progress is off to a good start.
- Alchemy:
Aslak's knowledge of alchemy is as of yet inapplicable for practical uses.
All of Aslak's alchemical techniques rely on a certain method that he was taught, as it involves transforming his inner power into a more usable form. Basically, it is weaved into "threads" that can be spread into objects via physical contact. They incorporate themselves into the structure and can be used to alter the matter in various ways. They are invisible in their dormant state, but do start to emit faint silvery light once active. They'll fade away during use, but can be maintained indefinitely in their dormant state.
The method has no other use than to serve as a base for different techniques.Firma - One of Aslak's most basic techniques. By concentrating on an object, the "threads" start to reinforce the basic structure of it. Once this has happened, the "threads" start to actively resist attempts to break its form. Bending the material becomes slightly harder and on top of that, the "threads" will slowly try to undo the bending. Attempts to penetrate the material aren't resisted, but attempts to advance deeper into the material become increasingly difficult. Were it to actually be broken in some way, the "threads" prevent the form from breaking, holding any possible fragments still and try to patch the material back together.
Fractura - Another one of the basic techniques, and is very similar to Firma. Instead of trying to hold the material together, Fractura is designed for weakening the object. The "threads" start to pull the material apart ever so slightly, making it easier to break. But since this is a low-level tech, the effects aren't as drastic as reducing steel on the level of paper or anything similar like that. A more appropriate example would be turning a regular stone to the level of regular wood.
As for Aslak's combat skills... they are a bit backwards for someone working as a mercenary in the modern world. For one, his markmanship is very poor. He was trained only on handguns, as they are easiest to hide and therefore more suited for RSF's covert operations. And yet he can't manage to hit anything reliably at anything past 20 meters, rendering Aslak's pistol nothing more than a very effective close-mid range weapon.
On the other hand, Aslak has had more success with hand-to-hand combat. His mentor taught him the basics of Escrima and, after seeing that it stuck with him better than marksmanship, shifted the focus of her combat training over to it. This means that Aslak is taught to fight primarily with weapons (two-handed, one-handed and dual wield). He hasn't mastered any specific weapon; instead, he knows a little bit of everything. The most important quality in all this is that Aslak can use most regular objects as improvised weapons with terrifying efficiency. Anything too exotic or impractical to use is outside of his skills, intended as a weapon or not, but anything else will do. He is also capable of fighting completely bare-handed, although this isn't preferred for its lack of efficiency when compared to an armed style.
As for the languages that Aslak knows. Being from Finland, he naturally knows Finnish. His grandparents, however, were very adamant on teaching their grandchild the native Sami language (of Inari Sami variety). So he did learn it despite not wanting to, although not all that well. With that in mind, coming across another seemingly mandatory language on 3rd grade (English) was not pleasant. But it was easy, so he did learn it well enough. Same went for the other mandatory language introduced on 7th grade (Swedish). And when it finally came to Aslak's mentor arranging him some basic courses on Russian for job purposes, he had developed a mild interest towards languages, so he improved better than he had expected.
He is also good at cooking, it being one of the few things that he feels passionate about. He still contains some interest towards it, but having become unable to eat anything was a big blow on this hobby of his. As such, he'd rather not talk about it.
Biography
Askeladd rested against the wooden wall. He was exhausted, barely managing to keep himself from sliding down. He was bleeding, with the largest wound making his side murkier and murkier while the smaller ones made their tiny contribution in dying this man red. He was dead, but that was an old toll: for the first time in his life, he actually felt like it.
It was silent. The background noise was there, but the place itself had nothing to make any sounds. The one person who could have made them was too focused on the idea of having a cig. His first response to the idea was a quick and simple "No. That would leave evidence.". But then he looked around; bullet holes, cartridges, bodies with varying levels of mutilation, perp's blood all over the floor... and the perp himself, too busy with trying to live to do anything about any of it. "Eh. Fuck it.".
Standing up was a bother, so Askeladd simply slumped slowly into a slouched sitting position after having lit the cig. The pain was getting worse. He felt it with his hand, trying whether or not touching the wound in the certain way made it feel less worse. He didn't try it the second time.
The adrenaline was surely going away. So was the blood, and life with it. He had experienced the miraculous healing that came with vampirism, but he also had never been injured this badly. If it did work in this case, it would certainly be a close call.
Askeladd realized that he should have been more concerned about this. And yet he felt calm, most likely out of the combination of both exhaustion and the cig.
He closed his eyes.
Once upon a time in a country called Finland, a boy called Aslak Riku Kaila was born. Afterwards, some stuff happened.
Looking back on it, most of the stuff was small and harmless:
Having trouble with math at school. Being teased about it by friends, which was a small price to pay for getting to hang out with actual friends. Dating before you're actually able to do so properly, and making a mess of it even when you're supposed to be able to handle it. Sister acting all rebellious, running away with her pal, only to return a few days later. , followed by moving to a place of his own, away from the middle of nowhere where he had lived for his entire life. Failing to get into any further education, but doing perfectly fine on the supposedly temporary one. Good times. Simple times.
And then you wake up one day and notice that you've turned into a vampire.
It was a day like any other one which involved getting up for work. Aslak felt a bit odd, but not odd enough to function, which meant that the feeling was something to be ignored. He got up, dressed himself, and headed straight to bathroom after switching the lights up.
The bathroom was where the things got noticeably weird. As Aslak started to brush his teeth, it immediately struck him that his teeth were feeling unusually sharp. Wondering about this, Aslak closed the shelf's door to bring the mirror to his view. He hadn't looked at it yet, since he
Aslak wasn't liking the way this morning was turning out to be, so he tried to get to the bottom of this issue in an instant. He took a photo of the mirror with his phone. Still no reflection. Just to make sure, Aslak took a photo of myself directly. It worked. He figured that the mirror must be broken. He finished brushing my teeth and went to make breakfast.
As Aslak was about to eat the rye bread, the realization of sharper teeth lurked back into his thoughts. It made Aslak realize that there was another explanation for having no reflection than a broken mirror. And that made him realize that mirrors couldn't be broken while still being intact. He decided to test this thought. He opened his single blackout curtain slowly as he held his other hand where the light would shine first.
After having calmed down and feeling that it was safe to take his hand out of the freezer, Aslak called in sick. He had to think about this.
Unfortunately, he didn't manage to solve out this problem before his first meal a few days later. The old man Linderman, Aslak's neighbor from next door, had some issues with his computer (again) and had reached out for someone who seemed to understand the said stuff better than him (ie. Aslak, "that upstanding young man from next door"). Aslak was already struggling with trying to
keep the urge in control. When Linderman's nose started to bleed due to the dry winter air, something snapped within Aslak. He can hardly recall what happened. But as he woke up, kneeling over a cold, bloodied body of his old neighbor, it was all all too clear even without the memories.
The aftermath was unexpected. Soon after Aslak had returned to the scene with some cleaning equipment from his apartment, he saw that Linderman had risen up and was expecting Aslak. The old man asked about what he should do. "Do what you have always done before", was Aslak's answer amidst his confusion. And just like that, the old man continued on with his life like nothing had ever happened, albeit with less skin tone than before. Aslak didn't know what to think about all of this. He returned to his apartment to think. He didn't exit the front door for four days.
Aslak's own thoughts got him nowhere. But luckily it wasn't up to him to make a final decision on the matter, for he was about to meet the reason for all this.
She arrived in the afternoon after the sun had set. Aslak was on his bed, still feeling shaken about the whole mess, and didn't notice this intruder until she made herself known.
"So... you've managed to keep yourself alive?"
He was startled by the sudden voice, causing him to quite literally jump out of his bed. Straight on the floor.
"...despite of your utter lack of spine. But you passed the test, so you'll have to do."
And then, as if giving Aslak a grand reward of some description, she explained herself.
Line. That was supposed to be her name, but Aslak doubted that anyone would be named as such. But she refused to give him any other name (or rather, simply lacked the drive to do so), so Aslak accepted this introduction.
Her purpose was a lot more clear. She was a mercenary who was ordered to get herself an apprentice due to the lack of staff in her company. To make things simple for her, she had the sole requirement of the chosen person to pass "The Test" in order to qualify. This basically meant that if the chosen person manages to both stay alive until they have their first meal and hides it in a manner that makes it hard for any authority (up to and including "those militant fuckers armed up to their asses with stakes") to connect the victim to the them, that person has proven themselves to possess innate talent for the job. Or something along those lines.
As for how she chose the people for this test of hers, she never told anything about that.
Anyhow, she made her case clear. But Aslak remained unaffected. The explanation hadn't brought him the comfort that he had wanted. Rather, it was telling him about getting more involved with this weird situation. He wasn't interested. He told Line to go away.
Line didn't take this well.
When the police arrived to investigate a rather bizarre homicide relating to a certain old man ("bizarre" being related to the fact that the suspect who died during the arrest seemed like he had been dead for days), they discovered that the suspect's neighbor was missing. His apartment was a mess, with some traces of the owner's blood on certain pieces of furniture, walls and the ceiling. The man's bank account was emptied on the same night. It has been speculated that this was done by the mysterious perpetrator who might also have something to do with the old man. The case is inconclusive.
From that day on, a man called Aslak Riku Kaila became a missing person.
Askeladd. That was the alias that Line chose for Aslak after her "persuasion" had proven to be successful. Her apprentice was still resisting the situation, but the resistance had become passive. On the surface level, he did what he was told. This was good enough as a starting point. The training could begin.
[i]*crack*
Askeladd opened his eyes as suddenly as the surprising sound had been. He moved his gaze to his left to see a neat crack in the wall. And as expected, out of that crack entered...
"So... still keeping yourself alive? Good."
Line strolled slowly in the room, inspecting the resolution with a keen eye. The mission had been Askeladd's baptism by fire, so to speak. His first seriously challenging mission. The final exam.
"The way you did this was messy, unrefined... to be honest, it was a one big mess. And yet you passed."
She shrugged and turned to face Askeladd once again.
8color=powderblue]"We'll see where that gets us. In the meantime, congratulations on completing your training"[/color].
She reached out her hand in a slow, grandiose manner towards Askeladd to help him up. Yet another reward.
"Welcome to Red Stahl Freikorps."
It must have been because of the exhaustion. But for some reason... In Askeladd's mind, this did feel rewarding.

No lists. Write that shit.
Also, what are these "normal weaponized items"? You can't just say, "Yeah, he can pull a rocket launcher out of his ass if he needs it." What is he working with?

As long as you don't try to pull him fucking up and miraculously saving everyone every time he talks to people, doesn't seem like there's anything to add.

Vampires can't use magic. The only thing they can do is use other people's magic, I.E. contracts and religion. Since you're going to have to pick between one of the other, I'll just skip over it for right now.

I know you kids all think you're Mugen, but you're seriously underskilled to be working as a mercenary. Your combat training is virtually nonexistent. If you go up against anything but regular humans, you're not going to fare very well.

There's ways to cook blood. You could do that. Don't squander your potential, child.

Credit where credit is due. No one's ever actually mentioned Revenants before, in-sheet or in-story. Good work, son.

Zuul, motherfucker. Is this actually how the group operates? Short on staff or not, this seems like a wildly innefficient and bad way to get new members.
Little more lenient on him being a pretty shitty fighter now that he's supposedly just brought on.
Other than being a Listing Larry, I have no problems with this basic character. However, biography is too short and doesn't explain much to us outside seemingly a single week in his life. Other problem is whether you want to be a magician or a vampire. Can we make this work? It's all up to you, because the power is yours.
